Evaluation

Despite the many hiccups along the way, I am pleased with the outcome of the documentary. One of the most important things that came out of it was my deeper understanding of DaVinci Resolve, an industry-standard editing software, that taught me about the use of proxies and how to better manage your workflow.

Prior to the production phase, I spent time researching the use of anabolic steroids and their regulations through the IFFB, also known as the Mr. Olympia judges. I also investigated the career of Ronnie Colemen, one of the most well-known bodybuilders of all time.

I also used that time to contact influential TikTokers and Gyms in my area and request an interview; this is where one of my first hiccups happened. I was able to secure an interview with Aaron Martin, a well-known TikTok Personal Trainer, as well as my local gym, which I frequent. On the day of the interview with Aaron, my laptop began to malfunction due to its inability to record at a consistent frame rate, so I had to abandon it and use my phone to call Aaron and screen record him using Apple's built-in screen recorder. Which does not record call audio, forcing me to reschedule with Aaron, which he was happy to do so, then my gym had to pull out of the interview because of worries they would make members of their gym feel excluded if they commented on PEDs.

This was an issue for a while forcing me to rethink a lot ideas in my doc, in the end I interviewed my friend Callum, who also regularly goes to the gym about his opinion on anabolic steroids, which helped me recover the rest of the project.

If I could do things differently would to do a test run in advance, to make sure everything ran smoothly.

After my gym had cancelled the interview I had hit a standstill for awhile, I was unsure on how to proceed, after a week of reaching out to other PTs in my area and all over the world I decided to scrap off interviewing PTs, and interviewed my friend who also goes to the gym regularly, I asked him questions about his views on PEDs and his experiences weightlifting over the years.

The interview took 3 hours to setup from rehearsing the questions, setting up the set, lighting, cameras etc.

Once there interviews were over I began to start editing the footage.

My first goal was to setup a cohesive work flow from my computer to my laptop, so I can start on one platform and finish on another, making the transition from college to home easier and not having to wait for file to upload on OneDrive and then download them.

I first began researching into Black Magic DaVinci resolve servers, setting one up on my computer and using a VPN to access my home network and edit the same project remotely however ran into issues with Macs comparability with networking with Windows machines, I tried all discernible options however could not get it working. So I opted to pay for Black Magic Cloud, their own solution to the previous issue, cutting out the need for a vpn, all I had to do was make sure the files were located on both PCs, so I looked into proxy media, a form of duplicate file, however at a smaller resolution and file size to reduce strain on the system resources and to make the files more portable, so I had all the original media on my laptop and used proxies on my pc, making upload and download quicker, however when the project was complete I'd have to render the project on my laptop as proxies cannot be rendered due to their quality.

This made my transition from editing on my laptop to my personal computer easier.

The editing process was relatively simply, after I cut up both my interviews into sections based on their questions to make it easier to edit and compile.

I opted to colour grade my face cam and interview with Callum myself, rather than use the default colour profile in camera, to do this I used TechniColours CineStyle colour profile, this profile washes out all the colours to make colour grading easier.

In conclusion
